My 2¢ Worth

can't believe another weeks has gone by already! It seems like just yesterday I mailed out the last issue of Web Sm@rts. Where does time go?

o now I'm sitting here writing this at the last minute, totally unprepared. My excuse... well I've been busier than a centipede in a toe counting contest. One of my current clients just swamped me with work and the she left for vacation in Colorado! About that same time I landed a couple new design contracts and have been working on their pages as well.

shouldn't complain. A couple of months ago I was sitting here twiddling my thumbs and whistling Dixie for lack of anything better to do.

y intentions were to develop a couple more new tools for you to use and get them posted this week. Well that didn't happen, but I'll get to it eventually.

n the meantime, I've gotten my good reviews on the List Generator and Thumbnail Maker I put up last week. If you haven't tried them yet, please point your browser to ParadigmWebDesign.net/. Look for them in the Webmasters Nook section of the navigation menu.

nd if you need some design work done fill out the Client Inquiry form and ask for an estimate. You'll be surprised at the deal I'll give you. I love being busy!

ne last thing. My prayers go out to the military personal, as the war has now officially started. It's was about 8:45 CST when the first air strikes began over Baghdad, Iraq.

HOW TO APPLY FOR YOUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR'S LICENSE?

by: Michael Green
How to Write a Newsletter TOOLKIT

For many people Newsletter or Ezine creation is shrouded in absolute mystery.

How do I know?

Well listen to this story...

The other day I was contacted by a lady who wanted to know which authority she had to apply to in order to obtain her Newsletter Editor's License.

Wait a minute....did you say "NEWSLETTER EDITOR'S LICENSE"?

Yep - that's right - I was being asked where the average Joe should go to apply to be given the right to publish their own Newsletter (or Ezine for that matter).

Oh...and also...how much would it cost them?

Hmm...now before you roll about the floor laughing, just think about this for a moment.

While most people do realize that you don't actually require a license to write whatever the heck you like - I've gotta tell you - that's NOT the first time I've been asked that exact same question.

Now in my view, if you're asked the same question by more than one person within a short period of time, then there's probably an army of others who think the same thing, but just haven't plucked up the courage to ask the question!

Now obviously the answer is that you DON'T require a license to publish your own Ezine or Newsletter - at least not in the free world.

...But the question is a revealing one, as it points to the fact that a lot of people out there are still confused about how to become a successful Newsletter editor.

So now, based on actual questions asked by the public, I've compiled my TOP EIGHT questions asked about newsletters.

And here goes...

Q. SHOULD I PUBLISH ON OR OFFLINE?

A. Only you can answer this question. Broadly speaking an online Ezine - delivered by email or via your website - has a big cost advantage of being near free to produce. But an offline printed newsletter has greater impact.

Q. WHERE DO I ACTUALLY START WHEN CREATING MY NEWSLETTER?

A. Start by sitting down and creating an outline plan for your new newsletter. How many articles and features will you require for example? Then sketch out a rough format before you do anything else.

Q. SHOULD MY EZINE BE IN PLAIN TEXT?

A. Conventionally Ezine publishing has been done in plain text, but increasingly many people's email systems can read HTML. There are many considerations and you might want to ask about your specific newsletter on a helpful forum like my www.howtocorp.com/forum where other more experienced newsletter editors will be able to provide you with personalized advice for your situation.

Each article is published with your name and web site, plus a short 'resource box' at the end of the article.

Q. SHOULD MY NEWSLETTER BE PRINTED IN COLOR?

A. If you're printing your newsletter, then your biggest choice will be the use of "color", "black & white", or what's known as "spot color" printing. This is largely a cost consideration, but don't forget how important design can be to creating the right impression. I've seen lots of EXCELLENT black and white printed newsletters!

Q. HOW WILL I FIND READERS FOR MY NEWSLETTER?

A. That's partly dependent on your subject matter of course, but if your trying to attract readers via the web, then there are a whole host of tactics that you should employ. Subscriber buttons, popups and exitpops are just some of them, but all the most sought after newsletters actually offer a gift to new subscribers too. This can be a free report or something else of value.

Q. SHOULD I ACCEPT ADVERTISING FROM DAY ONE?

A. Advertisers are usually looking for a good subscriber base, before they'll pay you to advertise in your Ezine. So concentrate on getting the basics right before you consider opening up advertising space. Remember to put your reader first at all times.

Q. CAN I RECOMMEND ITEMS THAT I'M AFFILIATED TO?

A. Yes. But don't do this unless you really are in LOVE with the product you are recommending. Check it out for yourself first and be faithful to the needs of your readership, by only recommending relevant items.

Q. WILL I NEED A LICENSE TO PUBLISH MY NEWSLETTER OR EZINE?

A. Absolutely not in most parts of the world. It's good old free speech and you can write what you like!

This week's TIP

Nowrap for Tables

Are your tables wrapping text and making some cells taller that others as a result? There's a very simple solution to this problem, an attribute of the <td> tag within your table. It's called nowrap and has no other value than itself. Here's how it works:

<td nowrap>

What this does is preclude text from wrapping inside the cell, but it will have the effect of stretching your tables horizontally. But if you want nice clean tables that don't have cell height variations, it's an effective method of ensuring all text stays on one line.

Getting Rid of Those Annoying Arrows in Shortcut Icons

by: Harry Husted
Write For Media

Oh, how I hate to see those small arrows in shortcut icons after my desktop appears. Is that what you always say at one time or another. Unfortunately this is something that many people say too often.

Why? Because, it is a common occurrence for everyone using a computer. No matter what type of PC you have, as long as you are running Windows, you have experienced it or are experiencing it now. So what causes those unsightly arrows to appear anyway?

Basically, when you create a shortcut or program information file (PIF), this occurs every time a program is installed and a shortcut icon is added to be shown on the desktop, the icon that is generated has an arrow in the lower left corner. Microsoft Windows has a registry setting called IsShortcut that causes this arrow to appear.

Although this arrow does appear, based on the IsShortcut setting, removing the setting will result in the arrow disappearing. The procedure to do this involves editing the Registry. Remember, using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows. Before attempting this, make sure to backup the Registry first.

To backup the Registry. open the Registry by clicking Start, Run, Type Regedit. When Regedit opens, click Registry, Export registry file. You give the file a name and location to save it to.

Now comes the nitty-gritty.

If you do not want new shortcut icons to contain this arrow, use Registry Editor to search for and remove the IsShortcut value from:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile

This procedure will work every time. Again, I must warn you. Tampering with the Registry can seriously jeopardize your system. Be careful as to what you are doing. If you feel uncomfortable with touching the Registry, ask a friend, who is a technician, to do it for you.

This way, the job gets down with no mistakes. But, I must say, if you follow the steps outlined above precisely, you will not have any problems whatsoever. Everything will work accordingly.

The next time you run your computer and you look at your desktop, you will not see any arrows, or any small images for that matter, anymore.

How nice that will be. Trust me. It works. I tried it on my machine and many others without a failure so far.

Just backup your Registry first for safety precautions. Because if you don't and you end of doing something you shouldn't have, you will be responsible for re-installing the operating system. What a chore that will be.
