Feature ArticleTips To Organize Your Home Office!
You search your desk frantically for an important file.
An email you printed only moments earlier is lost under stacks
of overflowing files. The telephone is ringing, but you
can't reach it because you are at your fax machine retrieving
papers across the room.
You finally answer the telephone and search wildly around your desk for a notebook and pencil. You find nothing, zip, nada!
So, what's the problem?
You finally realize that if you want your home office to run smoothly you must take immediate steps to organize it.
Whether your business is full-time or part-time. Even if
you are starting small or on a grand scale, you will certainly
run into problems if you avoid pre-planning and organizing your
office interface to run in an efficient manner.
This is a no-brainer! You must organize your space so that all essential office items are within arms reach. This will lead to
a smoother, more productive, work day. And make it easier to find
needed items at a moments notice.

It's surprising, the number of serious home office workers who do not understand this important fact.
Are you ready to get organized? Let's get started!
The desk.
Get rid of clutter. Go through that stack of paper piled
high on your desk. Make this a habit at the start of the work day.
Be brutal. If you don't need it, toss it in the wastebasket.
Now search those desk drawers. Why are you keeping old
broken pens, yellowed scotch tape, receipts from purchases
made ten years ago or clips from a magazine you read last summer.
Either file the important stuff or toss it now! Also, purchase desk
drawer organizers at your local office supply store. These handy
items have compartments to neatly organize your extra essentials.
Your computer and keyboard should be the main focus of your desk. Place a container with pens, pencils within arms reach.
Stack note pads nearby. Purchase desk top vertical or horizontal
organizers to stack important papers and keep them neat and orderly.
Books/essentials.
Stack reference books on a bookshelf on your desk, above your desk,
or one adjacent to desk.

Storage Disk
Store important CD's or floppies in a holder on your desk.
Peripherals.
Place your fax, printer, scanner adjacent to your desk. So you
will only need to move a few inches to access them.
Telephones.
Your telephone should be close enough for you to answer without leaving your desk chair. Believe me, running back and forth to answer or make calls can be very time consuming and tiring.
File Cabinets
If possible, place the files adjacent to the desk or in a way to suit your workspace and give you easy access.
Keep personal items off your desk. This includes your
favorite magazines, a favorite crossword puzzle, personal letters. And this certainly isn't the place to leave your favorite hand held video game. All these items will cause too many distractions.
Use the above tips as a starting point to get your office organized efficiently and improve work production.

This week's TIP
Source Code & Image Protection
While there is no way to completely block others from taking your source code and images, here are a couple tricks you can use to make code/ image-snatching a little more difficult. Although not fool-proof, it will deter most visitors from seeing your code and/ or stealing your images. Both of these tricks disable the right-click function, however, your visitors can still go in their browser under View\Source.
The first method requires you paste the following JavaScript into the <head> of your document. You can customize the text in red to display whatever alert message you want.
<script language="JavaScript">
// No rightclick script
function click() {
if (event.button==2) {
alert('right-clicking is not allowed on this page')
}
}
document.onmousedown=click
</script>
|
The next method is much easier, but will not give an alert message. Simply format your <body> tag as follows:
<body oncontextmenu="return false">

Defragment Guide
Are you trying to run Defrag on your Win95/98/ME/2000 system? Is it taking too long? Then you've come to the right place! Give me 5 minutes and I'll tell you how to speed up your defrags considerably.
Why do we need Defrag anyway? When Windows creates a new file on your harddrive, it will search for some empty space, and save the file at that location. When a file is deleted, you will get a hole at that location which is later filled by a new file and so on. The problem is, not all files are of the same size. The solution is to split the files into smaller equally sized parts. This way, when you delete one file and save another one, the parts of the new file will fit into the holes of free space. This works very well, but, after a while your files will be scattered all over your harddrive. When you try to read a particular file, your computer will have to search your harddrive for all the small parts. This will obviously take a lot of time. (Imagine trying to read a book with the pages in random order.) When you run Defrag, all the small file-pieces on your hardrive will be reorganized so that all the parts of a particular file are stored sequentially, in one place. This can increase the speed of your system considerably! (Especially if it has been running for a long time without defragging.)
Why does Defrag take so long? When Defrag is reorganizing your harddrive, it is very important that no other programs are using the harddrive. If some program decides to save a file while you are defragging, the defragmentation process will often be interrupted and start all over again. Because of this, defragmentation may take a lot of time.
So, what's the solution? To make sure that the defragmentation is not interrupted, here are a few things you should do before starting defrag:
1. Terminate all processes not critical to the system. Use WinTasks to find out which processes to terminate. (Leave system processes (red) and anything related to defragging.) Anti-virus programs should be stopped from within that program. (there is usually an option to temporarily disable virus scanning.) Read the process descriptions to decide if a process needs to be running while defragging (WinTasks 4 has built-in descriptions for most system processes and many other processes as well). After you have terminated all unnecessary processes, save the current process configuration to a preset (In WinTasks 4, press the small "key" button next to a preset button to save the current process list), so that you can easily restore the defragging configuration later.
2. Disable screensavers or other programs starting after a few minutes.
3. Disable any scheduled programs like virus checks.
5. Increase the priority of the Defrag program. You raise the priority from normal to high by clicking the "inc" button once in WinTasks 4. After increasing the priority, the icon to the left of the process name will change, and the priority column should tell you that the selected process(es) are now running at "high" priority. You can also save priorities to a preset, to make it easier to restore the correct settings the next time you need to defrag your harddrive. (Presets are available in WinTasks 4.00 or later)
6. Don't use your computer while Defragging!
