My 2¢ Worth

he publisher of another E-zine I subscribe to reminds us to, "look out a window today or walk outside!" Well when I look out my window all I see is gray skies.

s for taking a 'walk outside', thanks, but no thanks. I was outside today. It's cold out there! This may not be the coldest Spring on record in Minnesota, but it's darn close.

've made a decision. I'm going to move to Alaska and become an Eskimo. It's got to be warmer in Alaska than it is here.

o much for my tale of woe today. Enjoy the rest of the issue.

What Is Missing From This Picture?

by: Bob Osgoodby
Tip of the Day

How many E-mails do you get promising great riches or fantastic buys and you have absolutely no clue who sent it? Many of the return E-mail addresses are forged, and you have no possible way to respond to their offer. Despite the Federal Anti-Spam Bill, which became effective January 1, 2004, and set requirements for commercial e-mail, including opt-out provisions and valid postal addresses, many spammers are disregarding the law. They may give you a toll free number to call, where you will probably get a highly hyped recording, or you may get a Post Office Box to submit your application and payment.

What is missing from this picture?

They are!

The majority of people are pretty cautious. If someone jumped out of a dark alley and offered to sell you a "Rolex" for twenty bucks, you would probably just continue walking. What makes people think the Internet is a like a magic carpet, where all you have to do is make some type of outlandish offer, and people will flock to you with their wallet wide open?

It doesn't work that way folks!

If you expect people to deal with you, they must be able to identify with you and/or your company. If your company is not well known, they must be able to identify with you.

Remember the old saying - "Sell yourself first". When people are comfortable with you, the rest is easy. But how do I do this "you might ask".

There are a number of ways and the web actually makes it easy. Put a picture of yourself on your web site with a short bio and contact information. If a person knows how to get in touch with you in case of a problem, it makes their purchasing decision a lot easier.

Just this week, being in the market for some flat screen monitors, I found a seller on eBay who was selling them at a highly discounted price. He didn’t accept credit cards or PayPal, and wanted a certified check prior to shipment. He also didn’t have any history of selling on eBay and had a free email account — yeah sure.

Tell people how you help your customers and the successes they have had. Let them know how they need the benefits of your product or service. This is the kind of information that will build confidence in your customers and prospects.

Each article is published with your name and web site, plus a short 'resource box' at the end of the article.

A lot of people are reticent to give contact information on the web. They're afraid they'll get crank calls, or people will find out where they live. A real concern? I don't think so. There are ways around these types of problems.

I have a second telephone line that forwards the call to voice mail during non-business hours. I also keep the "ringer" on low. While I can hear it in my office, I'm not bothered if it rings at night.

Many places in the country don't have home delivery of their mail available, and a P.O. Box is their actual address. A P.O. Box is not ideal, but will be acceptable if a telephone number is provided.

Before you try to sell anything on or off the web, remember to sell yourself first, and you won’t be "missing from this picture."

This week's TIP

Status Bar Messages

Have you ever noticed the status bar on your browser? You know, the strip at the bottom of the window that shows you the status of current document transfers and connections to remote sites. Did you know you can code a message to appear in that box in place of the default on mousing over hyperlinks? This is very easy to do and can entice the user to click if the right message is used. Here's how it all works:

<a href=" home.html" onMouseOver="self.status='Go Home!' ; return true;">Home</a>

<a href=" page2.html" onMouseOver="self.status='Go to Page 2' ; return true;">Home </a>

Notice the JavaScript I've included within the anchor tag. This defines the message and targets the URL in question. You can have as many of these as you have links on your page! Custimize the fields in red to reflect your own links and status bar message.

Second Article

by: Jim Edwards
TheNetRporter.com ezine

I have a love-hate relationship with my computer.

In fact, often I love to hate my computer!

It will do things I know even the great Mr. Gates didn't intend, and it usually does them at the least convenient time (like when I'm on a deadline or in a hurry).

Rather than the usual whining and doing nothing about it, I've decided to share a couple of things that previously annoyed the heck out of me and the solutions I found to help you avoid these same problems.

*Disappearing Internet Explorer Status Bar*

The status bar at the bottom of the Internet Explorer web browser serves many purposes.

It allows you to hold your mouse over a link to see where the link will take you.

It enables you to see a page's loading progress as you wait for it to download.

Most importantly, the status bar allows you to see the little gold "lock" symbol that lets you know you've made a connection to a secure server (very important to know before you input credit card data).

For some inexplicable reason, from time to time, this status bar disappears from my browser.

Also, the toolbars at the top tend to move periodically and mess up my "system" for surfing the Internet.

Now, it's not the end of the world, but it really ticks me off when things change and I didn't change them! If this ever happens to you, here's how to literally "lock" the toolbars and status bar in place so they don't disappear or move again.

First, close all your Internet Explorer web browser windows except for one. If the status bar doesn't already appear in the window, go to "View" and then click "status bar."

Also, make sure you have all the toolbars arranged the way you want them.

Next, place your mouse over a blank spot on one of the tool bars at the top of the Internet Explorer browser window.

Right-mouse-click and a menu will appear where you should check the option "Lock the Toolbars."

Then, while holding down the key, click the "X" in the upper right corner of the window to close it. This will set your selection.

If you ever need to change your toolbars in the future, simply right-mouse-click on the toolbar and uncheck the "Lock the Toolbars" option, make the changes, and then re- lock the toolbars to keep them from moving or disappearing.

*Missing File Extensions*

One of the biggest pains in the neck involves opening Windows Explorer, viewing a list of files, and not being able to see the file extension (.doc, .txt, .html, etc.) for each file.

For some reason, Windows considers this classified information!

To make the file extensions show up, click "Start" then "Control Panel." Double-click "Folder Options" then click the "View" tab. Scroll down the list and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types."

You will now see the file extensions any time you open up Windows Explorer.
