My 2¢ Worth

'm back from my canoe trip. I must say it was a success. Oh, the weather could have been better, but you have to take the bad as well as the good I guess.

ow that I've had my little vacation, I feel refreshed and ready to do the work I was dreading before I took vacation.

o remember as you do your work to take frequent short breaks and at least one yearly vacation. You don't necessarily have to go anywhere or do anything special — just get away from the regular routine. One last bit of advise; don't take your work with you. Not even in your head.

ndependence Day in the United States is this Sunday. Independence Day 2004 will commemorate the 228th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

t the time of this signing, the U.S. then consisted of 13 colonies and was under the rule of England's King George III. Not surprisingly, the colonies had a problem paying taxes to England while they had no representation in the English Parliament. This was commonly known as "Taxation without Representation."

n June of 1776 a committee was formed to compose a formal declaration of independence from England. This committee was headed by Thomas Jefferson and a vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Nine of the thirteen colonies voted in favor of the declaration, and thus America began its independence and grew into the nation it is today.

lease remember, this is the reason our troops fight the world over today. Whether you agree with all our Nation's policies or not, is a great honor to serve your county. It is also important that you support out troops. They are the reason you live in freedom today.

Follow Through At All Costs!

I have had occasion to witness, over the years, how folks often do not do as they say.

Next to honesty the quality I most enjoy seeing in another is that quality where they withhold their speech until they know they can fulfill what they say.

The reason I like that has nothing to do with me but with themselves. If they say they will do something, then follow through and do it they are not lying to themselves. Regardless what the external outcome is, the internal one is a situation where the mind believes what it is told.

That one point is worth millions, if measured in money.

So often too many people say one thing and end up doing another. The consequences of that action breed failure at every corner. Never mind what the outside world thinks of that person, imagine the confusion and power sapping condition that persons brain lives in.

The mind will bring about anything a person wants. The ONLY condition is - - it must believe. If you spend your time telling it one thing and perform the opposite then it soon learns not to believe you. In fact by age five it is already well on the way.

If you don't learn these principles early it is a lot of work in later years, to bring the mind to a point where it believes what you say.

Some folks think that what they say out of their mouth to others does not affect their own mind within. That preposterous idea can be deadly to any project, if one continues in the belief.

If what you say to others has nothing to do with your own mind, please tell me where the words came from, where the ideas came from. And guess what the mind does with what it hears of the word uttered out of your mouth.

There is no escape from the union between your mind and your words.

The mind will believe what you tell it. If you tell it one thing and do another it is now confused and literally cannot bring about the condition you want.

The remedy is to slowly, but surely, begin to withhold your words until you know you can perform what you say. Soon the mind begins to believe again, and is much relieved at living in a condition where is can bring it's full power to bear on a project.

That is at the core of all success. The mind must believe, first.

The moral of the story is to never utter words you do not or cannot back up and carry through.

If you would succeed at the project on which you are presently working, you must believe. So remember, if you utter those words - - - - -

Dirty Little Computer Viruses and How To Protect Yourself

Whether you have learned your lesson from a past experience with a nasty computer virus or have been pressing your luck by surfing the web and downloading various files or opening those email messages sent to you by people you don’t know without any real understanding of just how vulnerable you really are each time you log onto your computer you now have the opportunity to discover what steps you can take to avoid such an annoying and many times destructive infestation.

Listed below are some of the guidelines you can follow in order to keep those nasty viruses from making a mess out of your computer and your life.

• Purchase and install a well respected antivirus software program and be sure to set it up so that it automatically runs when the computer starts up each time.
• Make sure to keep your antivirus software up to date by either using the automatic update feature that many come with or make it a habit to manually check at least once or twice a week for updates on your own.
• Set your antivirus program to scan for potential viruses each time you open a word-processing document like the ones that get sent through email. Viruses found in word-processing documents are called Macro Viruses.
• When purchasing software make sure to only buy from vendors that are well known and from ones you trust.
• Resist swapping data with the use of floppy disks or other mobile storage devices between various computers. If exchanging programs between computers is unavoidable just make sure to scan the storage device(s) for viruses before transferring data from one computer to the next.
• If using floppy disks to transfer data make sure to format them before using them for the first time.
• Never use pirated software. This is both illegal and a very good way to invite an unwanted computer virus.
• When downloading software from the internet do so as little as possible. There are many neat programs available on the internet, but unfortunately there are many viruses that go along with them also.
• If you must download programs from the internet ALWAYS scan them for viruses BEFORE opening them up to install on your computer.
• Probably the most important and neglected method of disaster recovery are periodic backups of all important files found on your computer. Should a virus happen to get through your lines of defense you may need to replace the virus corrupted files with fresh ones that have been kept for such an occasion.

Finally, it is not guaranteed that if you follow the above steps that you will not be the victim of a computer virus, but you can sure bet that if followed you will greatly reduce the chance of being an unsuspecting recipient of such an unwanted program.
