Perception Is Everything!

by: Ken Darby
The Pebble

The young lady walked over to the room where she knew her friend was. "May I see Irving, please?" she asked the woman blocking the door.

"We don't allow anyone but relatives to see the patients," replied the woman. "Are you a member of the family?"

"Why-er-why, yes. I'm his sister," said the lady.

"Oh, I'm so glad to meet you," said the woman. "I'm his mother!"

Wow! How's that for getting caught? Immediate problem, right?

It is a truth we too often see this in internet marketing, too. So many are trying to hype their products that it is easy to let an untruth, or an exaggeration, slip in.

Many there are who perceive this, even if it is not true. That is what hype does.

The seasoned browser will be well aware and look out. They will look for the site that offers products and services they want, give a clear explanation and be concise about descriptions.

Hype used to work at a time when the internet was younger. Today there is so much of it surfers are weary. The site with refreshing clarity, the email with the straight to the point sales message, the autoresponder message that gives value along with directions to your site, are all the more appreciated ways to get your sales message across.

How do you separate enthusiasm from exaggeration? That is not too difficult. The acid test is to ask yourself, after each point, "Does my product or service really do this?"

Often you must listen to that still, small voice within that says you are stretching, or bending the truth just a little too much.

Remember always, too, that it is not the words your prospect will react to. It is the perception he develops from your words that he will react to and if he perceives something less than real value he will simply go elsewhere.

Placing your article in Web Sm@rts is a great way to gain exposure for you and/or your business!
Each article is published with your name and web site, plus a short 'resource box' at the end of the article.

Then the next question you must ask is "What will my prospect perceive from this offer?"

Have you ever entered a room where there was a party, been introduced around and found that during introductions you suddenly knew you didn't like a certain individual? It happens sometimes.

It happens because you perceive an attitude you don't like, a mannerism that reminds you of something you don't like.

That is what happens with a web site, an email or other things in internet marketing. People perceive things they like and don't like. Your message, your site must allow the perception to be one that promotes the action you want, so stay away from hype and exaggeration. Don't stretch your principles.

Perception Is Everything!

This week's TIP

Always use proper file naming conventions

One of the most common mistakes web design newbies make is to use improper file naming conventions on their images. Then when their images won't display, they wonder why. The problem is that not all Web servers and browsers display the same way. The trick is to use HTML and file naming conventions that are common to all systems and browsers.

When you save an image in an image editor like Adobe Photoshop, you can name it whatever you want. However, there are several characters you should never use in a filename:

  • It's often convenient to use a long descriptive name like "My dog Rex.jpg" but when the Web server sees this it will stop reading the file name once it gets to the space. It will then look for a file called "My". The solution for this is to use underscores ("_") instead of spaces
  • People also often include dates in their filenames, such as "WifePix-6/20/00.jpg". In this case, the Web server will think that the slashes actually indicate directories. It will assume you mean that there is a file called "00.jpg " which is inside a directory called "20" which is itself inside a directory called "WifePix-6" The solution here is to use some other syntax for dates. A common way to express dates on the Web is to indicate the year, month, and date in that order without punctuation. For example, the filename indicated above could be written as: " WifePix-20000620.jpg".
  • Another common mistake is to use apostrophes as in: "My_dog's_pic.jpg". In this case, the Web server will think the apostrophe is a quote and will look for a file called "My_dog". Never use apostrophes or quotation marks within a filename.

Nearly all other punctuation marks can also cause problems. In general, it's safest to use only lower-case letters, numbers, and underscores.

Should You Worry About Spyware?

by: Penny D'Argesse
Y Spyware

Spyware does pretty much what it's name suggests - it spies on your computer activity. It is part of the whole group of computer challenges known collectively as Malware. The term Malware covers the famous worms, viruses and trojans as well as spyware.

Spyware comes in several varieties - moderate threat to major problems. It was once thought that 'cookies' were a threat to our hard drive. But today that has largely changed. Cookies are the least of your worries. Most websites use 'cookies' to personalize the visitor experience. Computer users understand the principal function of a 'cookie' and see them as nothing more than a tool to maneuver through web templates and questions.

Spyware is usually defined as a program that's sole function is to report back to someone unknown to you about your daily online activities. Today, some businesses use spyware as a marketing tool. The information a corporation can collect from a simple spyware program can assist in the next advertising campaign. Usually, a computer that has been hit with spyware runs very slowly and sometimes crash. These are warning signs that your computer.may have spyware loaded on it.

A person that spends the majority of their time on the Internet will experience these problems from time to time. It is a safe assumption that Internet surfers run a risk of contracting spyware from websites and downloadable programs. Even the innocent task of installing a new program onto one's computer can open a doorway for spyware. If the user is not on their guard, the chances are their computer is infected. And antivirus programs are not all they are cracked up to be.

Another major threat to your computer's security is 'key-logger'. What is 'key-logger'? A seriously deadly program that logs, and then reports back to its originator, all the keystrokes you make. Hackers can use this to obtain vital account information and passwords. Frightening stuff!

Fortunately, being infected by 'key-logger' is very rare. With all of the high-tech antivirus software on the market, hackers and other predators have a difficult time getting past firewalls and antivirus programs. But knowing that this technology is out there should frighten you enough to invest in anti-spyware.

Luckily this is a fairly straightforward process thanks to the good selection of anti-spyware programs on the market. Some of these are free to use, and almost all of them offer a single free spyware scan to check the current state of your PC - you shouldn't be surprised if you find that your PC has a spyware infection.

These anti-spyware programs scan your hard drive and compare the files with an up-to-date list of known spyware programs. For this reason it's important to keep the program updated - most versions will remind you to do this every so often. If you are happy to pay a small amount for commercial software, you'll probably find this part is done automatically. Take action against spyware - you'll have one less thing to worry about.
