My 2¢ Worth

he annual celebration of Halloween is observed in most parts of the world on October 31st. But just where did this celebration originate?

he word 'Halloween' actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. The celebration originated with the ancient Celts and was known as Samhain. Samhain marked the end of one year and the beginning of the next.

amhain began at sundown on October 31 and extended into the following day. According to the Celtic pagan religion, known as Druidism, the spirits of those who had died in the preceding year roamed the earth on Samhain evening.

he Roman Empire had conquered most of the Celtic lands by the end of the 1st century AD. Later, the Romans adapted and absorbed some Celtic traditions as part of their own pagan and Catholic religious observances.

he first instance of a Halloween celebration in the United States was recorded in Anoka, Minnesota in 1921.

What Makes a Good Logo?

by: Sharon Housley
FeedForAll

What is a logo? A logo is a design, graphical representation, image or symbol that represents a business or organization. Logos were initially used to distinguish and differentiate products, the logos assisted purchasers in finding the product they prefer or have come to trust (or not trust). When product selections were limited and items were marked with a logo which a consumer was familiar they would naturally assume a certain level of quality or value, even if they had not previously used that specific product from that vendor. Now many companies not only have a corporate logo, but they have a logo to represent each of their products or product lines.

The company or product logo typically appears on all printed media or websites that are associated with the company or product. The logo appears in all marketing material and media.

A logo is really more than just a graphic, a logo design is part of a larger marketing concept. Marketers take specific care when selecting a logo, and they give a lot of thought about what they want their customers to identify with the company or product logo.

Some logos are designed around color. Studies have been conducted about the psychology of color and how different colors evoke different emotions. Green is used to imply wealth or expense, a marketer might use a green logo to imply an increase in perceived value. Blue on the other hand has a calming and soothing effect. Multiple colors can be used to accent and highlight specific parts of the logo. Accented and highlighted colors should be contrasting and complimentary.

Regardless of what colors you select, be sure that you use standard pantone colors and websafe colors. Also make sure these colors can be easily reproduced in print mediums.

Logos should be simple, and not overly elaborate or complex. Newer businesses and technology companies should have modern logos, while long standing businesses may want to use a logo that emphasizes their business experience. That does not mean that an older business cannot freshen or enhance an older logo, they may just want to retain certain qualities so their logo is still recognizable. Rarely do business depart drastically from an established logo. For this reason businesses should select a logo that has longevity. Once you establish and build a strong corporate image, you will want to retain it.

Logos should be designed so that they scale easily and can be used in a variety of mediums: letterhead, t-shirts, and more. Always keep in mind that logos are part of a larger marketing concept. Promotional materials will require consistency to reinforce the company or product image.

Taglines incorporated into the logo help reinforce the underlying message in a logo and can be an easy addition. Countless memorable marketing campaigns over the years have associated slogans with a logo to hit a message home.

Increase Opt-in's In 3 Simple Steps

by: Sam Spoldir
Kaizen Business Blog

If you haven't yet started a mailing list to augment your blog or other website now is the time to get started. Mailing lists are economical and simple tools for building relationships with current and potential customers while also improving traffic with short reminders to visit your site.

Beyond using RSS techniques you can employ a quick and simple testing method that will convert more visitors into opt-in subscribers. This technique is very simple and if your familiar with split testing sales pages we are goingto use the same method using aweber, wordpress and popunder boxes.

1. To perform a split or A/B test you will need to sign into your aweber account and at a minimum create two web forms of the popunder variety. Why popunders? Simply put they convert better than sidebar forms.

2. After creating at least two new popunder forms, at the bottom there is a link for creating a split test. For the two forms you will want to split them fifty-fifty, if you have more than two then divide them equally but keep in mind that the more forms you test at the same time the longer it will take to get conclusive results.

3. Like the regular forms there is nifty link you click to generate the html code to run the split test. In the case of Wordpress blog simply insert that code by using the template editor into the header file. Right after the closing html tag is the perfect spot. If you have difficulty using the built in editor copy the code over to notepad and then copy it back to the editor when finished making changes.

With the split test setup and integrated into your blog or site now let it go to work. After a certain amount of time, depending entirely on how many visitors your site has, take a look at your aweber account and review the statistics gathered for the split test. If one form is performing better than the other then add another popunder to the split test. Remeber to be creative when setting up these forms with different words, phrases, fonts and colours.

After the initial setup you probably do not need to make any changes to the test, again depending almost entirely onthe volume of traffic and unique displays during that timeframe. To date spending no more than a few minutes each month for my sites has resulted in a minimum two percent increase of mailing list subscribers.
